3) Dashiki Shirt

One of the most traditional and world famous dresses that people in Africa wear is African Dashiki Shirt. Dashiki is a beautifully colorful garment that covers the upper half body and is worn by men as well as women. Bright and attractive colors are the specialty of this dress. It is a loose-fitting dress like loose top consists of embroidered neck and sleeves. Its V-shape collar gives it a unique traditional look. Brimless Kufi cap and a pair of pants is the best combination to be worn with Dashiki shirt.

The term Dashiki has been derived from the word ‘danshiki’ that is commonly pronounces as ‘dan ciki’ and its meaning is a shirt in Yoruba and Hausa language of West Africa. African Dashiki shirt is world famous and trendy in many countries of Europe and Asia for its unique color combination and print.

With the passage of time, modern African Dashiki shirt comes in various designs and patterns but still, the traditional look is well preserved. For the wedding ceremony, Groom usually wears traditional grey or white color Dashiki while the bride usually wears grey. These days the trend of traditional color has and these days blue and purple color is quite trendy for wedding occasions while black and red are common colors for mourning.

4) Kente cloth

Kente is another popular material of Africa that is used for making a dress. It consists of bright colors and traditional print representing the culture of the country. It is originated from the Ashanti kingdom which is known as Ghana. This cloth is prepared by Asante and Eve weavers with the use of special designing loom. Originally it was in black and white color but further dyes were added to it to prepare it with different colors. The best part is that the dyes were prepared from plants. Like Brown from Indian tamarind, green from spinach leaves, blue from indigo plants and red from dried camwood.

Kente cloth material is differentiated by sharply defined shapes prepared by using the techniques of loom weaving. There are more than 350 patterns that one can find in Kente cloth. The difference in the pattern occurs due to the difference in the intertwined thread. Each of these patterns and motif represents a different meaning.

5) Yoruba

Another dressing style that represents the bright and beautiful culture is Yoruba. This clothing style is popular in Nigeria. Unlike the dashiki shirt, these are different for male and female. Yoruba can be made out of a variety of clothes. Traditionally this dress is prepared by a unique cotton cloth prepared by traditional weavers.

It is different for male and female. The traditional dress of male consists of four pieces outfit and it is called as Agbada which includes Sokoto, buba, agbada, and fila, whereas female attire consists of three pieces namely buba that is a blouse type of dress, iro that is a wrap and round dress and gele, is a type of cap. For wedding Yoruba traditional attire, bright colors like orange, blue, green and purple are used.

6) The grand boubou

The Grand Boubou is considered as the definition of African masculinity. It is worn by most of the men of West Africa to a bit extent in North Africa and it consists of the wide-sleeved robe. It is decorated with intricate embroidery and worn or special occasions and religious ceremonies including Eid festival, wedding ceremony, Friday prayer and attending the mosque.

The grand Boubou is formal attire consists of three pieces which include a pair of the tie-up and narrow ankle trousers and a wide long-sleeved shirt, it also includes a sleeveless gown that must be open. All the three pieces of the dress usually bear the same color as the fabric. This attire is traditionally made up of silk fabric but now it is available in cotton and synthetic material as well.

Earlier it was meant to worn by men only but after world war II, women also started wearing this traditional dress. Women boubou is different from that of the men boubou. Unlike men boubou, women boubou consists of two pieces out of which one is a wrapper at the bottom and along overflowing gown to cover it all.
